Sunrunner Cruisers, first burst onto the luxury sport cruiser market in 2001. Since launching its first model, the award-winning Sunrunner 3400 (AMIF 2002 Australian Boat of the Year), the Gold Coast manufacturer hasn't looked back.
Sunrunner's continued success has certainly taken many in the Australian luxury sport cruiser market by surprise. In a market that had been traditionally dominated by a few established building yards, Sunrunner has quickly carved out its' own niche.
Managing director and Sunrunner owner, Paul Smithson puts their remarkable success down to a simple principle: "People, performance, quality and value for money; these are the golden rules." That philosophy has guided the luxury sport cruiser specialist on a determined growth path. In six years, The Sunrunner range has expanded to six hulls, from 28 to 48 feet, with more models in the pipeline.
Sunrunner's outstanding market response is evident in its rapidly increasing national and international network of dealers. Sunrunner is represented in every state of Australia by way of direct Dealership relations or via the emerging markets of “boat share and or boat membership schemes”. While the domestic market continues to prosper, the long term forecast is for Sunrunner to export as much as 60% of its total production. Sunrunner's International Dealer network includes locations in New Zealand, China, America’s, the Middle East, with other agencies appointed to represent the product in Europe. Recent trips by Sunrunner to Dubai and Shanghai Boat Show’s continues to provoke positive strategy for selling opportunities overseas. Whilst both these markets are emerging, positive opportunities have resulted from both.
Sunrunner has signaled it will continue to increase production throughout the next 12 months, without compromising quality. The Sunrunner Business, is supported by a comprehensive business plan formulated by Management. This plan has been monitored throughout the growth years of Sunrunner and with the significant investment in research and mould design, Sunrunner is creating and will continue to create an asset base for business success in future years.
"Success and careful planning go hand in hand. Developing a range of boats with both domestic and international appeal is no simple task, and Sunrunner regards ongoing research and development as imperative," he said.
During these six years, branding and positioning of the product has been managed with vengeance. The
branding has been based on volume advertising by way of several marine magazines, exclusive airline and vehicle magazines and local advertising through the Dealer network, the positioning required a little more strategy as the product is of higher quality and performance generally, current strategies involve specific ‘feature’ advertising. The brand is highly regarded and holds a high percentage of the boating public's awareness, therefore, now the focus will be on positioning, focusing on quality, performance and all the features that make this product different to other products within the market.
The focus on customer needs and quality is seen in every aspect of all models in the Sunrunner range. Features often regarded as optional extras come as standard. "Sunrunner has recognised, in order to distinguish themselves from the bigger, more established boat builders, we must offer something different," Paul Smithson said. "All our fittings are of the highest quality, including solid surface bench tops, fridges with 20% larger than average capacity, double-stitched upholstery, cherry wood cabinetry and the use of 30mm stainless steel bow rails instead of standard 25mm. All our fibreglass work is either double skinned or lined, using composite laminates," he said.
Another string in the Sunrunner bow is holding RINA certification for the 3700LE and SE models and a category 'C' (offshore / export) certification on the 2800, 3100, 3300 and flagship 4800. Such models are in various stages of RINA. Notwithstanding the RINA or other international markings and standards, the engineering structures within all Sunrunner vessels comply with international standards generally. Whether USA under ABYC, Europe under CE or Australia under USL codes, all structural laminates pass necessary codes.
If the success of this fledgling company to date is any indication, Sunrunner Cruisers looks set to be a formidable force in the luxury cruiser market. As Paul Smithson says, it all comes down to people, performance, quality and value for money.
