Walk down into the cabin of the 2800, grab hold of the stainless steel rail to guide you and you will be amazed at the amount of room available, not only head room but living room. It could be argued that no one wants to spend time below when out on the water, but come winter time I think we will all agree that there is nothing better than being able to retreat to your casual comfort of the cabin with your guests or family.
When you walk below you will find the shower and toilet to starboard while a sizeable gallery is nestled on the port side. In fact, there are some 38ft boats that don’t have as much storage or preparation space. Four cupboards under the laminate benchtops provide a massive amount of storage space for food and cooking utensils. The cupboards are finished in a cherry Wood with a satin finish adding to the vessel’s understated elegance. There is a two burner gas stove and a reasonable size sink to wash up after preparing a meal. Directly above the stove is an extractor fan, which also provides natural light, as well as a porthole to the left. Crockery and glasses can be stowed away in two cupboards behind the cooktop. The fridge is mounted under the steps beside the aft cabin and it is a generous size. It is a well thought out galley that will prove to be extremely functional when catching aboard.
A 15” flatscreen TV has been mounted to the bulkhead wall above the galley providing excellent visibility from the forward lounge. A good size table can also be located here or it can covert to a double bed. Unless you’re over 6ft 6” you’re not going to find it sleeping down below. There are also two port holes on either side of the forward vee, which provide good cross flow ventilation. A 6ft 6” person could easily stand below without having to hunch over – impressive for a 28ft boat.
The shower is also full head height and there is plenty of room to comfortably shower eliminating that fear of being confined, a welcome touch for those not so fond of small spaces. There is also a rail to keep soap and tooth paste holders in place. The only thing I would like to see added is a toiletry cabinet that features a mirror as well. The toilet is electric and the 2800 is fully compliant with the new sewage legislation coming complete with a holding tank. An Electra San can be fitted as an option if that is your preference.
The real feature of Sunrunner’s new 2800 would have to be the second cabin. A generous 8ft long cabin, which is amazingly large. And once again it doesn’t feel cramped, I have been on some aft cabin vessels where all you can do is basically slide your feet under and that’s as good as it gets. Sunrunner have even managed to include a small lounge with storage underneath it for overnight bags or linen. I have to say this is a hidden gem in the design of the Sunrunner 2800. Two double beds offer comfort for two couples who wish to stay overnight with a reasonable level of privacy. The alternative is that a young family can also comfortably go boating for a couple of days without any hesitation. Or finally, for the retirees who no longer have the need for a bigger boat, and simply want something that is easier to handle while still having all the comforts of home, all you have to do is look over a 28ft Sunrunner.
