The 5.7GXI Volvo Stern drive is exceptionally quiet and can be attributed to two factors: one being Volvo’s new exhaust system and the second being the amount of insulation that Sunrunner have used down in the engine bay. Sunrunner’s General Manager Andrew Scott comfortably stretched out on the port side lounge as we ran up the Broadwater and chatted about the features of the 2800.
Our Test boat was fitted with a 5.7litre GXI 320hp Volvo Penta Stern drive, which powered the 2800 out of the hole with ease and she sat effortlessly between 3000 and 3500rpm for a comfortable cruise speed of 20 to 25mph. At WOT the Volvo was humming along at a little under 5000rpm and the speedo ticked over the 40mph mark.
A dedicated helm seat slides forward and back to help you find your preferred driving position and the sports steering wheel also conveniently tilts.
I found I was quite comfortable both standing and sitting while in command of the 2800. If you do choose to sit there is a wooden footrest as well. The Test boat was fitted with trim tabs, which are nicely positioned to the right of the steering wheel and well within reach regardless of whether you sit or stand. The dash is finished in Burlwood with Faria gauges. With plenty of room to fit a GPS or Sounder, the electronics package is up to the owner. At the very least you would a combined GPS/Sounder. Raymarine or Northstar have put out some sensational packages, particularly the impressive new E series from Raymarine.
The 2800 carries 300 litres of fuel, 150 litres each side, and there are plans to increase this to 400 litres, which is a generous amount of fuel for a 28ft boat to carry, there is also 200 litres of water stored on board and that doesn’t include the hot water system’s capacity. At 3500rpm the Volvo will use between 30-35 litres of fuel an hour and considering you’re doing 25mph it gives you a reasonable cruise range. I would estimate that from Broadwater to Tangalooma, which is a good 2.5 to 3 hour run you would find yourself using 100 litres each with a hundred litres in reserve, which is a nice buffer to have.
